You would imagine that making a single-seat formula race car into a street legal machine would be awesome. And you’d be right. What you wouldn’t know is how truly awesome it could really be.
Built to promote the all-new 1.0L Ecoboost 3-cylinder engine, the Formula Ford Ecoboost is more publicity piece than showroom reality. It shouldn’t. It should be built.
Starting with a Formula Ford is a stroke of genius. Given that it is sans aero appendages, you needn’t worry about village speedhumps and parking on-ramps. Figure out how to fit some headlights and side indicators, and you’ll pass government regulation, at least in the United Kingdom. And by shoehorning Ford’s Ecoboost behind the cockpit, you have brought not only boost to the picture but also allows the car to pass smog.
Just before registering it for the road, Ford’s boffins has seen to upping the turbo-three’s boost pressures and pump horsepowers by another twenty to a bit more than 200. That and it being a formula car make it able to lap the Nordschleife at 7 minutes 22 seconds.
Suddenly, the Caterham 7, Ariel Atom and other track day cars become irrelevant. Puh-leeze, Formula Ford street car is where it’s at.
And that’s not all. This thing sips hydrocarbons to the tune of 20km/l when travelling at 120kph. You can have your proverbial cake and eat it too.
Do continue reading for awesome videos chronicling this silly silly creation. Do especially check out how it compares to a trifecta of German automotive brawn.
