Maico Buncio, 22, multiple-time championship title holder, passed away Sunday after succumbing to injuries sustained after a motorcycle crash during a Superbike UBK qualifying session in Clark International Speedway. Reports reaching Kuhol.net staff described Buncio to have “high-sided” (definition at Wikipedia) off his Suzuki underbone racing bike and slamming against a concrete barrier in the circuit’s Acacia corner.

Clark International Speedway and other racing circuits in the country are designed with minimal runoff areas, thus driving error may result to a serious accident, especially for motorcycle riders. Adequate run-off, sandtraps, tire barriers, and any other measures in order to conform to FIA and/or FIM circuit standards may be needed to ensure the safety of participants, spectators, and safety marshals.

A sad day it is indeed for Philippine motorsports. We symphatize with Maico’s family’s bereavement.
