A diesel-electric powertrain.
No really, if rumors are to be believed.
Earlier, speculation arouse that Mitsubishi was abandoning the Lancer Evolution series of rally-bred cars in light of Mitsubishi’s thrust to develop itself into a feel-good tree-hugging Electric Vehicle manufacturer. Inside Line received a response from Mitsu early March, which said:
MMC has kept the Lancer Evolution sedan evolving as the brand’s highest performing model in the global market. However, as the market’s needs and demands change, MMC is considering not advancing the Lancer Evolution concept in the same way as before, but to find a different direction for the Lancer Evolution model to evolve. The new direction, the technologies involved, and corresponding products will be disclosed in due course. (link)
Autocar believes that the “new direction” for the Evo would be a diesel-electric hybrid, “designed to save the car from tightening economy and emissions regs, while preserving its trademark mid-range shove.” If that be the case, then the years ahead may be interesting for the gravel-loving cognoscenti, especially if Subaru has a counterpart in mind.
